The Haverford College Ceramics Club has existed in its current form since the spring of 2008. Originally the ceramics club had a space in the basement of the dining center. Then James House was transformed into the student art center and the kiln and the wheels were moved from the DC basement to James House. However, by this time the ceramics club had disintegrated.

Ceramic art includes all things clay. From terra cotta to fine china, from sculpture to throwing, ceramics encompasses it all. We hope to make pottery accessible for all students whether they are verteran potters or completely new to ceramics.

The goal of the ceramics club is to provide the space, the materials, and the support for students of all skill levels to learn and practice ceramic art. Through the support of Students' Council funding, the ceramics club is slowly building a real ceramic studio. As it is, the ceramics club resides in two rooms in James House, one for the wheels and the other for the kiln. The next big acquisition will hopefully be a pugmill to facilitate the recycling of used clay.

The Wheel Room

In the wheel room one can find 4 pottery wheels for throwing pieces. All the throwing tools, clay, instructional posters, and everything else one needs in order to throw are in this room.

Wheels, tool cart, clay, aprons, and bathroom for clean-up.

Banding wheels.

Instructional posters for all stages of throwing and hand building.

Bin for collecting used clay so that it may be recycled. Helps minimize clay waste.

The Kiln Room

The kiln room is where one can find glazes and where pieces go to be finished. To finish a piece of pottery requires 2 firings. First, the bisque firing to make the clay pieces ceramic. Second, a glaze firing to put a finish on each piece so that they can be used.
